An Unusual Commute

Thursday, 1 March 2012
With Luke in Germany for two weeks on business, I've been taking the bus to work which hasn't been too painful, until today. This morning, there was a bit of a kerfuffle on my way to work, which made for an interesting start to the day.

To begin with, it was foggy. Not just a little foggy it was 'thick as pea soup' "I'm going to kill you Mrs. Preston" (Midnight Lace reference) foggy. I got to the bus stop earlier than usual, 12 minutes before the bus was due, as I'd found one closer to our flat. The time for the bus came and went, at first I'd thought I'd gotten it wrong, that perhaps the bus didn't stop at this particular one on Thursday mornings. I kept checking and rechecking the bus timetable and by the time I'd decided the bus definitely not coming the next one was due and I was no longer alone waiting for said bus.

The next one arrived and after a quick text to work to say I'd be late, I was on my way. Once we arrived at my usual stop I confirmed that I hadn't missed the earlier bus as for whatever reason it just hadn't shown up. Running late, a little disgruntled and cold from standing by a bus stop for thirty minutes we continued on our journey (in a very full bus) and I thought that would be the end of my little bus adventure. I was wrong...

It was just after the Grange Farm stop that things got really interesting - the bus driver crashed into the curb with an almighty crunch. (Just for the record no one was hurt besides the curb, oh yes and the bus). What made the incident more funny was the fact that the bus driver tried to continue on driving and pretend it never happened. The bus was not so forgiving, we got about 2 feet away from the scene when the bus collapsed on the left side. Oddly enough all of us passengers remained inside as the driver got out to investigate, until a smell like burning rubber alerted us it was time to leave.

Outside of the bus was an amusing sight, the school children were laughing, commuters were ringing taxis, and the best of all was the bus was blocking traffic in and out. I rang Nadia to alert her I would now be taking a cab into work, and bless her she said she'd come collect me, only problem she didn't know where Grange Farm was. So now I had Nadia driving, and Jodie navigating to find me in the fog.

They found me with particular ease, considering neither of them knew for sure where I was. When I got in the car we couldn't stop laughing at the drama of my morning until we got stuck in traffic. But finally I made it to work, over an hour beginning my morning commute. Let's hope my evening is not so dramatic, I've had quite enough adventure for one day!
